Good afternoon all. As you all may or may not know, the month of May is “ALS Awareness Month”. The term ALS stands for “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis” or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. This condition is a terminal neuromuscular degenerative disease that impacts the life of the patient greatly. Though this condition has no known cure, and is ultimately fatal, it can be treated and the symptoms and progression can be minimized to prolong life and allow a more enjoyable situation. Stereotypically, the life expectancy of an ALS patient can range from 3-5 years from their diagnoses, and 6 months in the later stages. But this is simply a textbook statistic, and each case can vary. As someone heavily affected by this condition, in the form of my Mother being diagnosed with ALS, officially in 2018. And if you think just because you do not have anyone you know with this condition, you have certainly been exposed to it, whether it be the ice bucket challenge trend, or otherwise. The late great Dr. Stephen Hawking was also a long term ALS patient, having been diagnosed at the young age of 21 back in 1963, going on to live with this incurable condition for another 55 Years, passing away March, 14th of 2018. This goes to show that everyone is different when it comes to this condition, and the most important thing you can do, is keep an positive attitude. Live every single day to the fullest, and cherish the ones you hold dear. I have dedicated my time to the continued caretaking I’ve my mother, and even with this devastating situation, we find the silver lining to even the darkest of clouds. Stay humble, stay blessed, and have a fantastic day!
Remember to donate if you can to fund ALS research, so that one day we may find a cure for this disease, and give freedom back to those who suffer it’s unfortunate effects.
“The ALS Assosciation“ is one of the leading charities that funds the ongoing research for the cure, just to give an example!
